THE ONE-SENTENCE RULE
Why would you approach multiplication using long addition when you have times tables?
You wouldn't.
Once you know that 7 × 8 = 56, you don't need to add 8 seven times every time you encounter 7 × 8.
You learned a simple rule that lets you solve the problem faster, more reliably, and with less mental effort.
I believe the same thing is true of SAT Reading.
Most students have been taught to approach Reading questions by reading, rereading, interpreting, eliminating, guessing, second-guessing—and hoping they chose the answer the test writer wanted.
I teach them a rule instead.
I know how powerful that can be because I discovered the One-Sentence Rule when I needed it myself.
In 1975, I took the PSAT and scored a disappointing 1200.
I was determined to get to Dartmouth, so I actually reverse engineered the entire SAT into a set of "times tables" that eventually took me to a 1580 SAT.
Nearly five decades later, I'm still teaching that same fundamental idea.
My One-Sentence Rule is the most powerful rule in my SAT system—and it is the foundation for my 1530+ SAT Guarantee.
It gives students a fundamentally different way to approach Reading:
Don't ask which answer sounds right.
Ask: “Where can I point to ALL the proof?”
My rule is simple:
Every word of a correct answer must match something in the text you can point to that means the same thing.
If you can't point to something in the passage that means the same thing as every word in your answer, it isn't the answer.
That's the difference between guessing and proving.
And just as you wouldn't choose long addition over multiplication once you know your times tables, I don't believe students should have to rely on complicated guessing strategies when they can learn a rule that gives them a way to prove their answer.
